Collection: Peter Butler
Newcastle-based artist Peter Butler trained at the National Art School in the 1970s and later under renowned portrait painter Graeme Inson, bringing over fifty years of painting experience to his work. A multiple award winner with more than 60 exhibition prizes, he has exhibited widely across Australia and the USA, with works held in corporate, council, and private collections including the Commonwealth Bank in Sydney.
Inspired by the Australian Heidelberg School and contemporary landscape masters, he is a painter of light, atmosphere, and depth. Working from outdoor oil sketches, he builds larger studio pieces through simplified forms, complementary colour layers, and a spontaneous, painterly approach where “less is more.”
