“A Little Longer” Varenna, Lake Como, Italy
Oil on Loose Canvas
Unframed
66 x 41 cm
Some moments ask nothing of us, except that we stay long enough to notice them.
There is a particular kind of peace that comes when we stop watching the clock.
When the next appointment, the unfinished work and the things we ought to be doing loosen their hold for a moment. We look up. We notice the colour of the water. The warmth of a distant wall. The way a hillside seems to gather a village into its arms.
And we find ourselves wanting to stay a little longer.
Along the shores of Lake Como, Varenna rests between the water and the rising slopes. Soft pinks and ochres catch the light beneath terracotta rooftops. Slender cypress trees reach above the buildings, while the church tower stands quietly against the hillside.
On the water, those warm colours become fragments of reflection.
Nothing is perfectly still. The surface shifts, the reflections break apart, and the village softens at its edges. Yet there is a gentle harmony to it all, held together by light.
We spend so much of our lives postponing this feeling.
We tell ourselves we will slow down when the work is finished. When everything is organised. When we have achieved enough to deserve a little time without an obligation attached to it.
But there is always something else to do.
Another task. Another reason to keep moving.
Meanwhile, the light is changing.
Perhaps the moments we remember most clearly are the ones when we allowed ourselves to linger. Sitting beside the water after the conversation had fallen quiet. Looking across a view without reaching for a camera.
Feeling, for a brief and lovely moment, that there was nowhere else we needed to be.
This painting offers that kind of pause.
Its open atmosphere gives the eye room to wander. The blue-green water carries touches of warmth towards us, drawing us into the scene. Across the shore, the village feels close enough to imagine arriving, yet distant enough to leave the everyday world behind.
For someone who knows Lake Como, it may bring back a treasured memory. For someone yet to visit, it may awaken the pleasure of imagining it.
And in a home, it can become a quiet invitation to set down the day’s demands.
To look again.
To take your time.
The water is still catching the light.
Stay a little longer.
Note - the painting is currently on loose canvas. The frame in the photos is a suggested frame. We can organise framing of the painting for you. Please contact us for more details.
